"Understanding the Usage of '는데', 'ㄴ/은데', and '인데' in Korean Sentences"
2. Grammar Explanation
In Korean, the expressions VS + 는데
, ADJ + ㄴ/은데
, and N + 인데
are used to introduce background information, explain a situation, or express contrast. Today, we will learn how to introduce background information!
VS + 는데
You don’t have to consider the ending of the character. Just put 는데 after verb stem.
Example:
"학교에 가는데, 날씨가 매우 추워요." (I’m going to school, but the weather is very cold.)
This shows contrast or background info before the main sentence.
ADJ + ㄴ/은데
If the adjective ends with a vowel, you use ㄴ.If the adjective ends with a consonant, you use 은.
Example:
"이 책은 재미있는데, 좀 길어요." (This book is interesting, but it’s a bit long.)
The "but" part contrasts the adjective with the rest of the sentence.
N + 인데
This construction is used with nouns to provide background information or introduce a situation in contrast to another.Usage: It is typically used when you want to give information or express contrast between two situations or facts.
Example:
"저는 학생인데, 일도 하고 있어요." (I am a student, but I am also working.)
It shows a contrast between being a student and working.
These structures can also be used to soften requests, give reasons, or create connections in conversation.
