V + ㄹ/을 것 같다: Making Predictions and Assumptions

The grammar pattern V + ㄹ/을 것 같다 is used to express assumptions, guesses, or speculations about future events or states. It’s equivalent to “It looks like…”, “It seems like…”, or “I think (someone) will…” in English.
Form
Verb (consonant ending) + 을 것 같다
먹다 → 먹을 것 같다
Verb (vowel ending) or ㄹ ending :
가다 → 갈 것 같다
열다 → 열 것 같다
Meaning & Usage
This form conveys that the speaker is not certain but is making a logical guess or assumption, often based on current evidence or context.
오늘 날씨가 흐려서 비가 올 것 같아요.
(It seems like it’s going to rain.)그 영화 재미있을 것 같아요.
(That movie looks like it’ll be fun.)
You can use it in different tenses to guess about the present, past, or future:
지금 밖에 비가 오는 것 같아요.
어제 늦게 잔 것 같아요.
내일 먹을 것 같아요.
🆚 Note: How It Differs from ‘V + ㄹ/을 생각이다’
🔸 V + ㄹ/을 생각이다 is used when the speaker has a clear plan or intention to do something, not a guess.
