2. Grammar Explanation
V + 아/어/해 가지고 is a commonly used expression in spoken Korean that connects two actions or ideas. It has several key usages, and its nuance can change slightly depending on the context:
1. Cause or Reason (because...)
This usage is similar to ~아/어서. It explains the reason or cause of the second clause.
Example: 비가 와 가지고 못 갔어요.
(Because it rained, I couldn’t go.)
2. Means or Method (by doing...)
It shows the method or means by which something is done.
Example: 책을 읽어 가지고 이해했어요.
(I understood it by reading a book.)
3. Sequence (and then...)
Often used when one action is completed and the next one follows.
Example: 숙제 다 해 가지고 놀았어요.
(I finished my homework and then played.)
🔹 ‘V + 아/어/해 가지고’ is a more colloquial expression than ‘V + 아서/어서/해서’, so it’s not used in formal or written language.
🔹 The form is created by attaching 아/어/해 가지고 to the verb stem based on vowel harmony:
가다 → 가 가지고
먹다 → 먹어 가지고
하다 → 해 가지고
