N + (이)라는
1. Title
Noun + (이)라는: Expressing “called / known as”
2. Grammar Explanation
The structure N + (이)라는 is used to introduce or explain the name of something, or to clarify what something is called.
If the noun ends with a consonant, you use 이라는.
If the noun ends with a vowel, you use 라는.
It often translates as:
“called …”
“known as …”
“the thing/person named …”
⚠️ Note:
(이)라는 almost always comes before another noun. It acts like a descriptive phrase.
It is different from 이라고 하다 (to be called), which is used more directly for introductions (ex. 저는 민수라고 해요 = I am called Minsu).
