The Netflix animated movie K-Pop Demon Hunters has gained huge popularity worldwide. The unique story, where K-pop idol group members are actually secret heroes hunting evil spirits, is what makes it so intriguing.
However, the movie didn't just grab attention because of its cool music and action. It also features various aspects of Korean culture, which has drawn global interest. Maggie Kang, the Canadian-Korean director of the film, emphasized the worldwide appeal of Korean culture, saying, "Just like K-pop or K-beauty, anything with a 'K' attached to it is loved by people."
What stands out is how the film modernizes elements of Joseon-era royal culture and symbolic imagery from traditional Korean folk paintings. The sets where the characters perform and the weapons they use in battle all incorporate elements of traditional Korean culture. Let's take a deeper look at some of the traditional Korean influences featured in K-Pop Demon Hunters.
The Starry Sword for Hunting Evil Spirits!
The sword used by the idol group ‘HuntRix’ member Lumi in her battles with evil spirits is based on the 'Sain' sword, a weapon used in the Joseon Dynasty to ward off evil spirits. Only the royal family could make this sword, and it was considered an important object symbolizing the safety and well-being of the nation and its people. When Lumi holds this sword, it’s not just for fighting—it carries the deep sentiment of protecting the country.
The Sain sword is engraved with 28 constellations, a traditional symbol representing the sky. So, when Lumi’s sword shines, it carries the meaning of these ancient symbols.
Cute Tiger and Magpie from Folk Paintings!
The tiger character ‘Duffy’ has become a fan-favorite mascot in the movie. This adorable tiger is inspired by the tigers seen in Joseon-era folk paintings. In these paintings, tigers are portrayed not as scary creatures but rather as cute and somewhat clumsy. ‘Duffy’ is a modern and charming take on these traditional tigers. While Western cultures often use lions, the movie’s use of a Korean tiger gives it a unique touch.
Alongside Duffy, there’s also a magpie named ‘Soochi,’ who delivers letters to Lumi. The combination of the tiger and magpie comes from the Joseon-era folk painting ‘Jakho-do,’ where a tiger and magpie are depicted together. In this painting, the magpie brings good news, while the tiger wards off bad luck. These two characters have become beloved by many.
Palace on the K-pop Stage!
The stage where ‘HuntRix’ performs features traditional royal palace motifs like the Dancheong patterns on the floor, and the backdrop showcases the ‘Ilwol Obongdo’ painting. Dancheong is a colorful decoration painted on buildings, meant to ward off evil spirits, while Ilwol Obongdo is a painting traditionally displayed in Joseon-era palaces, symbolizing harmony between the king and nature with the sun, moon, and five mountains.
The traditional patterns on the stage blend beautifully with the lighting, presenting a stunning depiction of Korea’s beauty.

I watched this last night and really enjoyed it! The "fangirling" was really funny, and I loved all the cultural references. I recognized several locations, too, like Naksan Park and of course Namsan Tower. My Korean friend also explained the double meaning of Saja Boys (Joseung Saja 저승 사자 and Lion 사자). Very clever! And the Soda Pop song is still stuck in my head, hahaha.
I appreciate the deeper explanation!
