1. Title
The Expression "-고 해서" (Expressing Reasons)
2. Grammar Explanation
The expression "-고 해서" is used to provide one reason among multiple possible reasons for an action. The speaker highlights a primary reason while implying that other contributing factors exist but are not explicitly mentioned.
Usage:
It is often used to suggest that the reason mentioned is not the only one but serves as an example.
It can be used with both action and descriptive verbs(adjective), as well as nouns followed by the particle "-도".
Structure:
A/V-고 해서 → Verb/Adjective + -고 해서
Example: 날씨가 춥고 해서 집에 있었어요. (It was cold, for one thing, so I stayed home.)
N-도 V-고 해서 → Noun + -도 Verb + -고 해서
Example: 돈도 없고 해서 오늘은 집에 있으려고 해요. (I don't have money, for one thing, so I plan to stay home today.)
A/V-기도 하고 해서 → Verb/Adjective + -기도 하고 해서
Example: 피곤하기도 하고 해서 약속을 취소했어요. (I was tired, among other reasons, so I canceled the appointment.)
Common Variations:
The pattern can be extended to list two representative reasons:
N도 A/V-고 N도 A/V-고 해서
(머리도 아프고 잠깐 쉬고 싶기도 해서 텔레비전을 봤어요.)
(I had a headache and also wanted to rest, so I watched TV.)A/V-기도 하고 A/V-기도 해서
(운동도 하고 건강을 챙기고 싶기도 해서 헬스장에 등록했어요.)
(I wanted to exercise and also take care of my health, so I signed up for the gym.)
